Desolate Island Poets Society grew out of the Utter Innocence Poets Society and Polaris Poets Society that were founded in 1979 and were of great importance to Chinese poetic circle in 1980s-90s. Modern famous poets Xu Jingya and Wang Xiaoni are the representative figures of the society who together with other 15 poets such as Shu Ting, Jiang He and Gu Cheng, etc. were invited to attend the First "Youth Poetry Meeting" . Thereafter, Utter Innocence Poets Society achieved instant fame and became one of the major four national university societies along with the May Fourth Literature Society of Peking University, Fudan Poets Society of Fudan University and Jiangnan Poets Society of Anhui Normal University. In 2003, the society was reorganized and led by the CCYL Committee of Jilin University and undertook by Experimental Class of Humanities of Jilin University.
