Institute of Chinese Studies of Jilin University (the Institute), is founded in 1988 and affiliated to the College of the Humanities, JLU. The Institute is the key research base of humanities and social sciences in Jilin Province, provincial “First Batch of New Type College Think Tanks” as well as JLU’s key research center.
Professor Zhang Fugui is currently Director of the Institute. Zhang is a senior professor of philosophy and social sciences at Jilin University. Zhang is also Convener of the Chinese Discipline Assessment Panel of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Chairman of the Chinese Discipline Teaching Instruction Committee of the Ministry of Education. Zhang was designated as Distinguished Professor of “Chang Jiang Scholars Program”, Leading Talent of the “National High-Level Personnel of Special Support Program” (abbreviated as the “Ten Thousand Talents Plan”), recipient of “National Famous Teacher Award of Higher Education” and “Cross-Century Excellent Talent” of the Ministry of Education. Zhang is also Chief Expert of the “Major Projects” of the National Social Science Fund of China and Chief Expert of the “Project to Study and Develop Marxist Theory” of the Ministry of Education. Professor Zhang is also the Vice-Chairman of the Research Association of Modern Chinese Literature, Vice-Chairman of the Lu Xun Research Association, Vice-Chairman of the Research Association of Sino-Japanese Comparative Literature and Vice-Chairman of National College Chinese Language Research Association.
The Institute consists of twenty-six professional researchers, including twenty-four professors and doctoral supervisors and two associate professors. Among all the high-level researchers, two are senior professors of philosophy and social sciences at Jilin University, one has been selected as Leading Talent of the “Ten Thousand Talents Plan”, two are “Chang Jiang Scholars Program” Distinguished Professors, five have been selected into the “Program for Cross Century and New Century Excellent Talents in University”, five are Chief Expert of the “Major Projects” of the National Social Science Fund of China, two serve as Chief Expert of the “The Project to Study and Develop Marxist Theory” of the Ministry of Education, and one is Chief Expert of the “Key Projects in Social Sciences”of the Ministry of Education. The Institute boasts four senior experts and provincial senior experts. In recent five years, the Institute’s research team has undertook 5 major projects and 19 considerable projects for the National Social Science Fund of China, and 6 significant projects for Humanities and Social Sciences Fund of the Ministry of Education. The Institute has also published 482 academic papers and 39 academic monographs, of which three works have been selected into the National Social Science Achievements Library and won the first prize once and second prize two times of the “Outstanding Achievements in Humanities and Social Sciences” of the Ministry of Education.
For many years, the Institute has been gaining recognition in academia. At the beginning of 2015, the Institute ranked the Top 25 of the “The Overall Influence Rankings of China Think Tanks 2014” according toChina Think Tanks Report 2014issued by the Think Tank Research Center of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. According to the report, the Institute was rated the Top 5 by a sub item of the “Influence Rankings in the Field of Research on Cultural Construction”. Others among the rankings are the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the National Research Center of Cultural Industries in Tsinghua University (RCCI), the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and the Development Research Center of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China.
